Stay Passionate and Never Give Up

王小燕

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. Today I’m honored to deliver you a speech “Stay passionate and never give up”.

On March 14th, 2018, the whole world was shocked by the news that the world-famous physicist Stephen Hawking passed away at the age of 76. Born in 1942 (exactly 300 years after the death of Galileo) in Oxford, England, he is widely regarded as one of the world’s most brilliant minds. Professor Hawking broke new ground on the basic laws which govern the universe, and he sought to explain many of these complex scientific ideas to a wider audience through popular books, most notably his bestseller A Brief History of Time.

Apart from his great achievements in physics and cosmology, it’s his determination in battling with his condition that made him a champion for those with a disability around the world. In 1963 Hawking was diagnosed with ALS, shortly after his 21st birthday. He was told that he had only two more years and he lived each day after that as if it were the last day in his life. In spite of being wheelchair-bound for about 55 years, Hawking lived his life to the fullest.

For him, life would be tragic if it weren't funny. Travel was one of Professor Hawking’s pastimes. One of his first adventures was to be caught up in the 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Iran in 1962. In 1997 he visited the Antarctic. He plumbed the depths in a submarine and in 2007 he experienced weightlessness during a zero-gravity flight, routine training for astronauts. What he did brought most complex scientific ideas closer to ordinary people and raised public interest in scientific research. Stephen Hawking was a man of passion and full of dreams. In addition to an extensive programme of travel and public lectures, he still hoped to make it into space one day. He dreamed of being a rock star and sang with the rock band Pink Floyd twice. In 1988, the magazine People named Hawking one of the 25 most humorous people in the world.

And he wanted others to feel the passion he had for understanding the universal laws that govern us all.“I want to share my excitement and enthusiasm about this quest. So remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious, and however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.”

Writing years later on his website, Professor Hawking said:“I have had ALS for practically all my adult life. Yet it has not prevented me from having a very attractive family and being successful in my work. I have been lucky that my condition has progressed more slowly than is often the case. But it shows that one need not lose hope.”He could be bounded in a nutshell and counted himself a king of infinite space.

In response to Chinese actor Wang Junkai, Hawking said, “It has granted me insight into Chinese Millennial on their thoughts and curiosities regarding the future. It is this curiosity and confidence that I hope to see grow as you pursue science and other creative ideas. Let’s look to the future together.”

“Hawking’s exceptional contributions to scientific knowledge and the popularization of science and mathematics have left an indelible legacy. And his character was an inspiration to millions.” Let’s pay tribute to this great man and follow his examples to stay passionate and never give up.

Hold the future in our hands

    高三2班  刘涛

Good morning, everyone. It is my great pleasure to stand here to deliver a speech. Today, the topic I want to share with you is to hold the future in our hands.

Someone said “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”.  I’ve always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want it to be. We are all in the position of the farmers. If we plant a good seed, we reap a good harvest. If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.

A poet said “To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour. “ I once listened to a lecture, from which I learned a lot. I’d like to share it with all of you. Let’s show our right palms. We can see three lines that show how our love, career and life is. I have a long line of career. What about yours? I wondered whether we could see our future in this way. Well, let’s make a fist. Where is our future? Where is our love, career, and life? Tell me. Yeah! it is in our hands. It is held in ourselves.

We are from all over the country. It is our same dream to have a bright future that makes us gather here. We have get over many difficulties on the road to our dream, and none of us is willing to fail at last. So, what should we do?I believe that what we need to do is cherish the time in GUOHUA, cherish the good resources provided by our school, work harder, and hold our future in our own hands. At last, best whishes to all of you: wish you ever youthful, ever weeping!

Thanks.
