Thanksgiving Day

姜晓辉

Good morning everyone, my topic today is the festival of Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is a United States national holiday celebrated annually on the fourth Thursday of November. The date of US Thanksgiving differs from Thanksgiving Day in Canada, where it is celebrated on the second Monday of October. Thanksgiving 2018 precedes “Black Friday” and is traditionally a holiday to give thanks for the food collected at the end of the harvest season, so it is also the day with the highest food consumption of the year. It includes both religious and secular aspects----being both a harvest festival and a festival of family. The origins of Thanksgiving Day are believed to lie in a first harvest celebration held in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621.

In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers embarked on a journey to discover the New World. After a treacherous journey lasting 66 days, they arrived near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth. Throughout that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half of the Mayflower's original passengers lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the remaining settlers moved ashore and began to harvest with help and alliance with Native Americans of the area. This alliance tragically remains one of the sole examples of harmony between European colonists and Native Americans. Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789, after Congress requested a proclamation by George Washington. It has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863, when, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving, nowadays, Together with Christmas and the New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader fall/winter holiday season in the U.S. as well as in the whole world.

The festival of thanks-giving day gives us a chance to speak out our thanks, our love to those who help us, assist us, support us, no matter whether they are the people or the things around us. In this way, I think it has the same meaning as your Uncle Yang’s motto: “Be good to others, be good to the society.

That’s all, thanks for your attention.

Everything comes to him who waits

Good morning, my dear teacher and students,

I am very glad to make a speech here. Today my topic is: Everything comes to him who waits.

I believe that everyone has asked themselves: does my current effort work? Can I achieve my goals? Especially in the face of unimproved results, we began to doubt ourselves. I would say, of course it works. Everything comes to him who waits.

The familiar story of Edison's invention of the light bulb is a case in point. More than 6,000 materials were tested over and over, and more than 7,000 experiments led to today's light bulbs. Edison may have questioned whether the current effort would work, but he has been trying. You don't know when you will be successful, but you know that no pains, no gains.

We came to this school, telling to ourselves: my near future all starts here. How about now? Do you still remember the passion for fighting? Have we wasted too much time measuring the usefulness of effort but ignore effort itself? What immediate results do you want?" But I'm always failing." You might say that. Why is failure a bad thing? Failure is not always negative. On the contrary, it is a sign that you are moving towards your dreams. Man proposes, god disposes. A solid foundation is always the first priority, isn’t it? It takes some time. So don’t be impatient. Rome wasn’t built in one day.

Remember what Hemingway said: “People are not born to be defeated. People can be destroyed but can not be beat.” Everything comes to him who waits.

That’s all. Thanks for your listening.
